Science vs Intelligent Design vs Creationism

Science is based on observable phenomena. Scientific Theory is a story or model of reality that is consistent with the known observed phenomena, it is testable and can be used to predict future events. Scientific Theories are Scientific Hypothesis that have withstood the test of time and attacks on the hypothesis by the use of the Scientific Method. Hypothesis start as an conjecture. A conjecture is a provisional idea whose merit needs to evaluated using the Scientific Method to confirm or to disprove the conjecture. Theories, hypothesis and conjectures can be disproved whenever the facts contradict them. When a theory is proved, it becomes a law. There are few if any Scientific Laws. Many so called laws are just well accepted theories.

Intelligent Design was born out of opposition to the theory of evolution and the belief that life on Earth was designed or created by an intelligent agent or agents. Proponents of Intelligent Design study objects in an attempt to isolate what they call signs of design by intelligence — physical properties of an object that necessitate design as opposed to an undirected process such as natural selection. Examples being considered include irreducible complexity, information mechanisms, and specified complexity. Advocates of Intelligent Design say that their focus is on detecting design in nature, not about who or what the designer might be. Advocates of Intelligent Design also argue against the assumption in science that any meaningful explanation is based upon an empirically accessible material reality. Materialism of this sort rules out explanations that depend on factors located outside of observable nature, including most concepts of an active creator. Intelligent Design proponents argue that the exclusion of supernatural possibilities amounts to an ideological prejudice that obstructs the genuine search for truth. Intelligent Design appeals to those who believe in the supernatural or God. Another group that Intelligent Design appeals to are those who believe in extraterrestrials as the intelligent agent.

Creationism is the belief that human beings, the world and the universe were created by a supreme being. That said, however, Creationism covers a spectrum of beliefs. Some of these are: Babylonian, Christianity, Egyptian, Greek, Hindu, Hopi, Islam, Judaism, Maya, Navajo and Taoism.

My main source of information used above was wikipedia, which is a online wiki free encyclopedia, along with other web pages and my own knowledge. So if any of the above is in error please leave a comment or email me. Thanks.

The following is what I think about the above.

Creationism generally belongs to our religious beliefs and/or institutions. This concept does not belong in our classrooms. Almost everyone agrees with this. Not because they do not want their beliefs taught, but because they do not want someone else's beliefs taught in the classroom.

How about the battle between Intelligent Design and Evolution. Proponents of Intelligent Design say they are offering an alternative idea to overcome perceived problems in the Theory of Evolution. Their perceived problem seems to be that The Theory of Evolution seems to leaves no room for God. As a conjecture to explain changes in the Theory of Evolution that may be needed with the discovery of superior beings in the universe (extraterrestrials) Intelligent Design is OK. However, its being used to bring the Christian's God into the class room.

Oh another thing, the Proponents of Intelligent Design are trying to make their idea look better by tearing down The Theory of Evolution instead of building up Intelligent Design. They seem to have gotten this tactic (negative campaigning) from the politicians. From what I read online and in the papers the people pushing that Intelligent Design be taught in the classroom have no idea what the Theory of Evolution is, just that it not conform to the Bible. Now its OK to require that the short comings of the Theory of Evolution be taught in the classroom as long as the short comings of Intelligent Design are also taught. There are plenty of problems in both ideas.

Now don't get me wrong, I kinda like Intelligent Design as I fits in with my beliefs. But I think it needs to be taught in Sunday school not in Monday through Friday school.

I don't think that Intelligent Design and the Theory of Evolution are opposites. To me Intelligent Design is an addition to the Theory of Evolution. The Theory of Evolution is based on material observations. Intelligent Design should just be about adding the unobservable or the supernatural and should not be used to tear down the Scientific Method. Without the Scientific Method mankind would still be dying from the plague and many other diseases.

The problem is that "they," you know "right" who "they" are, want to teach ID in the science classes and that evolution is wrong. Just one step closer to teaching the Bible stories as facts in school.

I think all beliefs should stand up to the glare of light. Those that cannot withstand examination would fade away and those that benefit will get stronger.
